Critical Researched Literary Analysis Proposal

CRP Proposal

Prompt number: #3

Primary literary text: “Super-Frog Saves Tokyo”

Primary Freudian text: “Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis”

Working title: The Freudian Frog

Working Thesis: Murakami highlights the underground criminal side of society that he had experience with growing up and is a sign of repressed memories, which he portrays in “Super-Frog Saves Tokyo”, and shows how the worm in Japan is resembling Japan’s struggles back with the economy and attacks that happened.

Abstract: I am planning on writing about the relationship between “Super-Frog Saves Tokyo” and Freud’s idea of repression and how Murakami’s childhood experiences caused him to write this short story. It portrays his view of society and goes into depth on underground crime, financial and safety problems in Japan. The time is referring specifically to Japan in the mid-1990’s. I will connect his view of society that he has shown through this story to Freud’s psychoanalytical concept called repression and how society has influenced Murakami as a kid. This will tie into infantile sexuality and what psychological events happened to him in his early years to cause him to look at society from this perspective and write the story. I chose this topic because after looking into Murakami a little further, I found him to be a very interesting person. Perhaps even more interesting than Freud. I also really enjoyed reading “Super-Frog Saves Tokyo” and the meaning behind it. It’s the most interesting short story I’ve read out of all the stories and that’s why I feel confident in writing my paper on Murakami’s story. I am in the process of researching more of Murakami’s background to make a stronger connection to Freud’s concepts. So, I’ve still got some work to do before completing my first draft of the essay.
